My Story

Steve Walker

Hello, I’m Steve.

I’ve worked in technology for over 30 years, including 20 years building startups.

Vic20 Computer

At around 10 years old, I was a computer geek with a VIC-20, learning to code in BASIC and copying programs from computer magazines.

A couple of years later, I moved on to a Wren Computer—an early portable model with a handle but heavy as a brick.

It had a basic spreadsheet program, and I started building spreadsheets for my Dad. That experience introduced me to profit and loss and cash planning, connecting technology with real-world business needs.

IBM and LINX

In the second half of the ‘90s, I entered the formal technology sector with a job at IBM Global Network Services. This role served as a launchpad to work at the London Internet Exchange (LINX), where I truly grew technically.

At LINX, I was involved in managing and planning the switches and servers that handled 98% of the UK’s internet traffic at the time—a geek’s dream.

I also worked on internet protocol developments like Multicasting, tackling how we’d get video streaming effectively across the net.

idibu and Compono

In 2003, after moving to Barcelona, I launched my first startup—oneworldmarket—a marketing and web development firm. In 2007, I founded idibu, a recruitment technology platform built as a SaaS product.

We started by bootstrapping the business but later secured investment rounds from Daxtra and Benula Capital, expanding to serve over 500 clients worldwide.

Throughout this journey, I wore many hats—from CEO to CFO, and of course, acting as CTO. Along with my business partner, we developed an advisory board and led the process of planning and gearing up the business for an exit. In 2021, idibu was acquired by Compono, where I currently act as an advisor.

Blockchain and nature

In addition to advisory roles, I’ve been working in the blockchain space. In 2022, I launched The Blue Marble, collaborating with the Stellar Development Foundation. We’re delivering enterprise blockchain solutions, such as supporting farming communities in South America with incentive schemes and enabling rural communities to access financial services.

At the same time, I’ve been utilizing artificial intelligence both within my own businesses and those I advise. AI is undeniably a game changer, and I believe we all need to adapt quickly to stay current and relevant.

Now, I work as an independent advisor, sharing my experience in building and scaling businesses. I help companies leverage technology to drive growth, improve operational efficiency, and prepare for future challenges like AI integration.

My approach is straightforward and practical, focusing on aligning technology initiatives with overall business goals.
